- Sigvard Mahler Dam on his website writes (as of October 18, 2011):
Torkild Uf is hypothetical, since no one by this name is mentioned in the extant sources. He serves to fill a missing link between Jens Uf and Otte Pedersen (Uf) via a probable son, namely Peder Torkildsen.
The sources of information are scarce on the island of Bornholm in 1400s, but they have not disappeared completely. In 1443 there exists a list of Bornholm squires, who promised the archbishop of Lund their fidelity. This list ought to contain members of the Uf-family - of coarse they could have been sick that day, or even dead, but there are 2 brothers who are also is mentioned in a document dated 1433, and they are interesting because their seal shows "en ligesidet trekant med et kors" (an equilateral triangle with a cross), which several of the Uf-family used in 1400s instead of the coat-of-arms with the chevron. The brothers are named Mogens and Peder Torkildsen, and may indeed have had a father named Torkild.
On the 7th of November 1433 a trial was held in Hammershus of a squire who had killed another squire. The verdict was sealed by several, among others by "Mans Th?rkils?n aff wapne" (Mogens Torkildsen of arms - ie. a squire), as seen in A. Thiset's "Danske Adelige Sigiller", which places it under "indeterminate crests M. 65). Around the shield is written "sigillvm Magni torkilli" (Mogens Torkilsen's seal).
On the 6th of June 1443 a meeting squires is held at Hammershus with the newly elected Archbishop's envoy, who received their promise of faithful service. The original is lost, but the transcript mentions squire "Maens Thorkilss?n". In both cases Mogens Torkildsen is mentioned just before Peder Torkildsen, so we must assume that they are brothers and that Mogens is the eldest. It is not known whether Mogens Torkildsen had any surviving children.
The article "Landet Borringholm", by Sigvard Mahler Dam, (SAXO, 1986), states the following on pages 78-79:
A great span of time follows the March 23, 1416 document in which time Peder Uf, then between 30-35 years old, acted as a witness at a land-transaction in Nyker. It is not until 1493 that his son "Otte Pedersen Wff" appears in the Bornholmer records, as an older man with adult sons from two marriages. Where have they been during that time? The records are silent, and a person is prone to provide a reason for the gap in the documentation, for there should not be so few entries for a man with such an occupation. He should be found mentioned in the island's written documents rather more frequently, this was quite prevalent with other Bornholmer families (57).
Above it was suggested that Peter Uf might have been married to a woman from Fyn, and an odd occurance of chance supports this hypothesis. In the first half of the 1400s a Tue Pedersen lost his seal in N?rrek?s Harbour, north of R?nne; which was recovered in a later century. He is not the Tue Pethers?n of the Rani family, which we know had Harebjerg manor, for his coat-of-arsm displays the Bild/Strangesen's transversed shield - therefore of the same family as the Archbishop Niels Joensen, Johannes Ufs mother's brother. His father may be Peder Strangesen. The latter's brother lived only on Fyn: Otte Strangesen recorded in 1377 and 1397! Possibly Tue Pedersen came to Bornholm looking to found kinship, and stood at the gunwale of the ship and fumbled with his seal, so it fell into the sea? Was Peter Uf married to Otte Strangesen's daughter, and so came the name Otte in this way into the Uf-family? A name which otherwise was entirely unknown on Bornholm in that social circle. Did the family move to Fyn after this marriage, allowing their adscript peasants to run their Bornholmer farms? Was Cecilie Uf visiting her brother Peter Uf after her second husband's death, and while there she met Hr. Hartvig Limbek, her third husband? Is this the reason for the relative lack on Bornholm of written documents mentioning Peder Uf?
Otte Pedersen's his first marriage was with a widow of Sk?ne origin, namely Anders Galen's daughter from Sk?ne, and perhaps it is this connection that eventually brought him back to Bornholm. Their two sons inherited from their mother's brother, Anders Galen the younger, who died childless in Lund in 1522 - he had written a will in 1511 (58), where his heirs are mentioned: "Mister Peder W, Cannik in Lund, my dear Relative. . . Item my dear Relative Anders W."
Notes: (57) Otte Wff placed seal on a letter of 1493 printed in Suhms Assemblies I. II. s. 43, and in 1497 10/8 placed seal on "Aatte Persz" and "Olloff Aattesz" with same seal that was used in 1493 - document is reproduced by H?bner 35. (58) Anders Galen's will of 1511, 19/11, Thisets reproduces in Rigsarkivet, Copenhagen.
Nothing is really known about "Petrus Wf". Edvard Skovgaard states (without providing any evidence) that he is the son of Maren Uf (-1379-), the wife of n.n. (called Uf); who would appear to be the same person as Jens Uf's sister Marine, as identified by Sigvard Mahler Dam from Niels Jensen's testament of 1379. Sigvard identifies Peder Uf as being the brother of Cecilie Uf (and thus the son of Joens Uf) based on the fact that they both appear to have a connection to Nyker parish: Peder Uf acting as a witness to a land transaction in Nyker, and Cecilie Uf's donation of the silver chalice to the Nyker Church.
The assurtion by Sigvard Mahler Dam that Peder Uf's wife was the daughter of Otte Strangesen (before 1350-after 1397) of Tange in Gudme district on Fyn, seems to be based on two facts: 1) Otte Strangesen's brother Peder Strangesen's son Tue Pedersen is thought to have been on Bornholm in the early 1400s. Sigvard speculates that it is possible that Tue Pedersen arranged the marriage of his cousin to Peder Uf; 2) Peder Uf's sister Cecilie's third marriage was to Hartvig Limbek of Jelsore and Nebbeg?rd in Vejle county, Jylland. Hartvig's previous wife had come from Fyn. Sigvard speculates that Cecilie's marriage must have been arranged by Peder Uf through his wife's relatives on Fyn. How else could a widow living in Hardeberga in Sk?ne gotten a husband from Jylland?
The Aneklubben Rundetaarn database has Peder Uf's wife as the daughter of a Laurids Jensen (of Yrw? near Landskrona?). That Laurids might be the son of Jens Pedersen (-1360-1377-), of Bellinge, "markmand" of Falster island, and his wife - the daughter of Jens Falster. Possibly because one of Jens Pedersen's other sons was named Otte Jensen (died 1397-1401), Commander (Hovedmand) of Salt? (near N?stved, Sj?lland)?
From "Landsdommer-Patriciatet p? Bornholm", part 1, by Sigvard Mahler Dam: On July 16, 1448 we meet the new Chief Justice (Landsdommer) Sevid Nielsen, and he had apparently only just been appointed as chief justice as on that date he confirms to the Archbishopric in Lund that he and his wife Kirstine have, as their fief for life, received one estate farm (hovedg?rd) and eight other farms in five parishes. These farms were most likely part of the domains of the office of the chief justice, and this letter it the first letter of endowment of a chief justice we know of on Bornholm. From the preserved seal of his daughter we see that the family had a coat of arms which is divided vertically and that the first field is half a lilac; which is exactly the same coat which the descendants of Claus Kj?ller used at a later date. During Sevid Nielsen's tenure as chief justice there is a long period between documents, and the next time he is mentioned is the last time while he was alive: February 1, 1469 the Archbishop orders: "Sevid Landsdommer is to summon Peder Lauridsen's heirs in Ibsker Parish for a claim by Per Lang in Wall?se (F?rs county in Sk?ne) against them." Twenty years as chief justice is a long time and soon after he died.
Conclusion, by Norman Lee Madsen:
"Landsdommer" Anders Uf (senior) married Sevid Nielsen's daughter, Anne, and from an undated letter it is known that this couple is endowed with a hovedg?rd: Store Kannikeg?rd, 15 Vdg. Bodilsker (a "frivornedeg?rd"), and the eight farms which Sevid had been endowed with in 1448. The former endowment of 1448 stated that Sevid was to possess the farms as long as he lived, and this has to mean that he is now dead, and that the son-in-law, Anders Uf, had succeeded him as chief justice. Anders Uf (senior), took over Store Kannikeg?rd after the death of Sevid Nielsen; he is described as being a nobleman (adelsmand) and a "Storbonde" (freehold landowner). A "Jacob Splidt" became chief justice after Anders Uf, which Sigvard Mahler Dam states might be as early as, or before, 1487; Jacob married Anders Uf's widow Anne, who outlived her second husband as well. Anne, as widow of both Anders Uf and Jacob Splid, issued a gift letter in 1508 to the Archbishop in Lund, the letter had, among other witnesses, Peder Uf's seal upon it.
Mentioned in the 1511 will of Anders Galen (died 1522) are "Master Peder Uf, Canon in Lund, my dear relative, 2 Guilders and a down blanket. Likewise to Hans Myre, 2 Guilders. Likewise to my dear relative Anders Uf, 2 Guilders and my folding table." Peder Uf and Hans Myre were named to act as executors of his testament. As the chief justice Anders Uf (senior) had been dead for over 20 years, the Anders Uf mentioned in 1511 must be the same person as the Anders Uf who is listed in 1499 as being admitted to the University of Greifswald on November 26th under the name: "Andreas W de Bornholm".
Since we know that Chief Justice Anders Uf (senior) was married to Anne Sevidsdatter, then the student Anders Uf (junior, as he was a student he would likely have been around 20-25 years old in 1499: thus born between 1470-1480) is most likely the son of Otte Pedersen Uf and n.n. Andersdatter Galen; since we only know of two Ufs on Bornholm at that time who could have been married to a sister of Anders Galen (died 1522) - and the elder Anders Uf is ruled out: he was already married to Anne Sevidsdatter. It seems likely to me that Anders Uf (senior) is the brother of Otte Pedersen Uf.
We know that Anders Galen's sister was married to a Hals of Bornholm, with whom she had three children - all born between 1450 and 1470: J?rgen Hals, Anne Poul Olsens, and Else ?dberns. (Note: there is no known evidence for the existence of an ?dbern Hals; most likely "Else ?dberns" is a patronymic, but we can't rule out the possibility that ?dbern is the name of Else's husband.) Since Anders Uf (junior) was most likely was born between 1470 and 1480, it isn't a stretch to conclude that ?dbern(?) Hals died between 1460 and 1470. And that the widowed n.n. Andersdatter Galen married Otte Pedersen Uf, with whom she had two sons: Peder Uf (-1497-1508-1511-1518-1520-) and Anders Uf (-1499-1511-1533-). (Note: it is possibe that n.n. Andersdatter Galen was actually married to Peder Hals (-1443-1457-), ?dbern Hals' putative father.)
We know that Otte Pedersen Uf had more children (with the sister of "frimand" Jens Olufsen of Klemensker?): Oluf Ottesen (Uf), and Mogens Uf's mother (the wife of Oluf Tuesen, of Krashaveg?rd). And possibly also another daughter named Karine (-1546-1550-) of Landskrona, the widow of Rasmus Henningsen, who is mentioned in a court case (source: Landbohistorisk Selskab, see below) from 1546-1550, along with the younger Anders Uf (possibly deceased by 1546? - he is incorrectly identified in the Landbohistorisk website as the husband of Anne Sevidsdatter), Peder Uf (possibly deceased by 1546?), Mogens Uf, and Oluf Ottesen Uf (deceased between 1522 and 1546). However, since these other children aren't mentioned in either the will of 1511 or the court case of 1522, they can't be the children of n.n. Andersdatter Galen.
The youngest son, Oluf Ottesen (Uf) appears as a witness in a document from 1497, alongside his father Otte Pedersen (Uf), wherein he borrows his father's seal (there are two identical seals on the document), so he must have been very young, likely born between 1470 and 1480. This would also place n.n. Andersdatter Galen's death at between 1470 and 1479.
Of course, other explainations of family relationships could fit within the facts as known. It certainly is possible that Anders Uf (senior), and Anne Sevidsdatter, are the parents of Anders Uf (junior) and Peder Uf. This would entail either Anders Uf (senior) or Anne Sevidsdatter being related to Anders Galen. The mother of Anders Uf (senior) and Otte Pedersen (Uf) is not known (some say that she is the daughter of Laurids Jensen Markmand, of Bellinge on Falster island; Sigvard speculates she is the daughter of Otte Strangesen Bild, of Tange, Gudme district, Fyn); possibly she was a sister of one of Anders Galen's parents (i.e. a Galen or a Rani). Or perhaps Sevid Nielsen's wife Kirstine (her patronymic is not known, nor any family-name) was an aunt to Anders Galen.
However, to ignore the fact that Anders Galen's sister is known to have been living on Bornholm, and the evidence that points to her children with ?dbern(?) Hals (it seems to me that since we have no certain record of him points to his dying as a fairly young man, possibly in his early to mid-thirties) being born between 1450 and 1470, which is before the likely dates of birth of Anders Uf (junior) and Peder Uf - both of whom were most likely born between 1470 and 1480.
