- Hans Jensen Bidstrup's origins are still a mystery, even though a danish-american by the name of Babs Bidstrup published an article in the newspaper "Bornholms Tidende" (on September 6, 1973), in which she states his origin as being in north-eastern Germany, from where he emigrated to Sk?ne (southern Sweden), and then over to Bornholm. Proper documentation for this is missing. There is no known connection between Hans Jensen Bidstrup and Bidstrup Hovedg?rd (Bidstrup manor) in Granslev parish, Houlbjerg district, Viborg county. The fact that Hans Jensen Bidstrup did not use the Bidstrup name in the 1688-89 land tenancy book would seem to indicate that it was not a family name, but rather an indication of place of origin. However there are several possibilities other than Bidstrup manor, as there are three villages by the name of Bistrup (a common spelling variation used on Bornholm for the family): in Birker?d parish and Tik?b parish, both in Frederiksborg county, and in Fodby parish in Sor? county, as well as Bejstrup parish (with an alternate spelling of Bistrup) in Hj?rring county. Dr. M.K. Zahrtmann wrote in his article "Det Gamle R?nne" (Bornholmske Samlinger, vol. I, book 13) that he suspected that Hans was probably from Sj?lland.
Hans Jensen Bidstrup became Deacon (Sognedegn) for Klemensker in 1670, where he lived at the parish's Degneg?rd, at about that same time he married the parish pastor's step-daughter: Kirsten Haagensdatter, who died after about 8 years of marriage, leaving two daughters behind - her probate was held on February 4, 1678.
His second marriage was to Ellen Nielsdatter of Allinge. It seems that around 1680 the relationship between Hans Jensen Bidstrup and the pastor in Klemensker, Oluf Jensen Aalborg, was strained due to financial disagreements; this seems a likely cause for his giving up the position of deacon. In any case, by 1682 the family had moved to Vestermarie parish, where he later he became Reeve (Sandemand) for the Western District (Vestre Herred), and served as a Captain (Herredskaptajn) in the district.
We also know that around 1682 his deceased wife Kirsten's sister Sidsele married Berild Clausen, and that this led to a dispute over Hans' two daughter's inheritance. After receiving permission from Bornholm's Dean, Claus Predbj?rnsen Langsted, he took "the honourable and learned gentleman Oluf Jensen Aalborg, pastor for St. Klemen's Church" to court for 12 Slettedaler owing to his two daughters in the form of "their deceased mother's fine wardrobe." The judgement made was in the favour of Hans Jensen Bidstrup. Some years later we again find the same names in the law-registry - but this time Hans Jensen Bidstrup is acting as attorney for pastor Oluf Jensen Aalborg against Berild Clausen!
He is recorded as "Bonde" of S?g?rd, 33 & 34 Slg. Vestermarie, in 1688; then in 1699 the family moved to Store Bjerreg?rd, 9 Vdg. Vestermarie.
Probate after Hans Jensen Bidstrup's death was held on Store Bjerreg?rd, dated October 26, 1729. He was recorded as being 84 years, 5 months, 2 weeks and 3 days old.

February 27, 1708, 172b: Capitain Hans Bistrup af Vestermarie sogn, ?nskede at se det kald og varsel som var udstedt til hans svoger Hans Jespersen vedr?rende kornet i Johan Knudsens lade. Hans Jespersen var d?d og Hans Bistrup s?gte opklaring sagen. Birkefogeden mente, at det var for tidligt at sige, hvad der var rigtig, da skiftet endnu ikke var renskrevet. Det saa ud til, at lodsedlen paa kornet var udstedt til Johan Knudsens datter Anna Johansdatter.
Sidste ting var afholdt kun to dage f?r Hans Jespersen d?de og siden var der ikke sket noget i sagen. Den beordrede dommer Anders Monsen fra Krashave var nu ankommet til tinget og kunne neds?tte sig i dommers?det. February 27, 1708, 172b: Captain Hans Bidstrup of Vestermarie parish, wanted to see the summons and notice that was issued to his brother-in-law Hans Jespersen concerning the grain in Johan Knudsen's barn. Hans Jespersen was dead and Hans Bistrup sought clarification the case. The district bailiff felt it was too early to say what was right, since the probate was not yet transcribed. It seemed that the ticket for the corn was issued to Johan Knudsen's daughter Anna Johansdatter.
The last assembly had been held just two days before Hans Jespersen died and since then nothing has been done in the case. The new judge, Anders Mogensen from Krashave (in Klemensker) had now come to the assembly and could now assume the judge's seat. Mogens Clausen felt himself "offended in his good name and reputation" that the case should proceed, as he believed that Johan Knudsen had a County Diet ruling with costs of 50 silver dollars which, as the heir, should be paid to Anne Johansdatter; Jens Knudsen was her legal guardian. The probate settlement had been appealed to the County Diet by Mogens Clausen to get the reimbursement.
Captain Hans Bidstrup had summoned Mogens Clausen and his wife Lisabeth for the "dishonorable words as they had said and committed to Hans Jespersen on a Sandvig street on the 23rd of January last". Mogens Clausen would not approve the application and did not accept that district bailiff Johan Thorsen should be judge in this case because it is associated with the previous case, where Hans Jespersen had seized grain from a barn. He would also not recognize the two witnesses summoned: Niels J?rgensen from Sandvig and Hans Rasmussen from Allinge, as they were involved in the grain the case, and not credible to testify honorably in the case when they were Hans Jespersen's "unskilled labourers." Witnesses should be impartial, he argued. The district bailiff did not believe that the two cases were connected and demanded that the case to be made. Anders Mogensen from Krashave was in the judge's seat and inquired if it was not possible for the two sides to reconcile. "However, as in this matter Mogens Clausen acted towards Mr. Captain Bistrup, on the deceased Hans Jespersen's behalf, friendly and amicably."
